Mary M. Rothrock was the fifth of six known children of Adam Bennett Rothrock Sr. (1820-1891) and Lucretia Kathryn Cox (1835-1912), who married 29 Oct 1858 at Putnam County, Missouri. Adam was first married to Elizabeth Whitlow (1824-1852), who married 11 Jan 1843 at Davidson County, North Carolina and had four known children and moved to Illinois shortly afterward they married. During the early days of the Civil War the Adam B. Rothrock family moved to Iowa to escape the troubles in Missouri. On 01 April 1865 the family started out by covered wagon train for Oregon. After arriving in Oregon, the family spent a few years in the Marion County, Oregon area before they moved to Umatilla County, Oregon where the family was listed in the 1870 census.
