Son of William Preston & Mary (Stanley) Cox; husband of Mary Ellen (Hadley) Cox. Children: Minnie Mae; Nellie Neva; Pearl Ann; Bertress E.; Charles Elton; Herbert Earl; Wava Belle and Harper Mearl.

(From a copy of an obit that I got when I went to Argonia in July 1996, the obit was dated April 18, 1890.)
John P. Cox
Bro. John P. Cox, son of Wm. Preston and Mary Cox was born in Sangamon County, Illinois, November 9, 1846. He had 4 brothers and 3 sisters, of whom the 4 brothers are living. When he was two years of age his parents emigrated to Jasper County, Iowa, where he grew up to years of manhood. His mother witnesses that he was a kind, obedient, honest and truthful boy.

He was united in marriage union with Mary Ellen Hadley, June 20, 1865. June 20, 1890 he would have been married twenty-five years. As the fruits of this union there was born unto them 8 children, 4 sons and 4 daughters, 6 of whom yet remain to cheer mother's heart and comfort her lonely hours. He was a true, kind and devoted husband and a very affectionate and indulgent father.

He was received to membership by the order of Free Masonry about the year 1870, of which he attained the rank of Royal Arch Mason.
True to his principles he lived in honor with the brotherhood. He was devoted to the church and held allegiance to Christianity paramount to all other obligations. His beloved companion and two daughters, Nellie and Pearl, were united with him in church relations. As an honest, industrious christian gentleman he won the admiration and esteem of his neighbors with whom he tried to live in peace. He bore his protracted afflictions with christian resignation, waiting in faith and hope until his change should come.

With loving hearts his devoted companion and children administered every relief possible to the sufferer. He died April 8, 1890 of spinal irritation, being 43 years 4 months and 29 days. Asleep in Jesus, Blessed Sleep from which none ever wake to weep.

A mother and four brothers, a wife and six children survive him, to mourn their loss. For him to live, we believe, was for the glory of Christ but to depart and be with Christ is far better.
Rev. J. M. Thompson
