Norton Henry was the first child of five born to William Henderson Messenger and Laura Abigail (Thayer) Gilbert.

Norton's siblings were: Sarah Adah; Edward Forest; Ellsworth Grant and Alice Elizabeth. His older half-siblings [whose mother was Elizabeth Manville]: Eliza; George Washington; James John; Grover [died young]; Nicholas Clare; and William Wallace. All surviving children came to Iowa when their father moved from Ohio in early 1855.

Norton Henry married Clara Belle Allen Poland, a widow, and daughter of Thomas Jefferson Allen and Mariam Jordan Leighton, on March 7, 1888. They had six children: Lavera Adah, Lee Allen, Erna Belle, Orville Norton, Thomas William, and Frederick Glenn, all born in Washington County, Iowa.

N.H. was engaged in various businesses in his life. He was primarily a physical laborer and a Mason for 55 years. It is also said that he loved music and even played the fiddle in his younger days. He had a beautiful bass voice and loved to sing with his family.
