John Thomas McDow was the son of Rev. William C. McDow and Elmira B. Brazil McDow. In October 1868, he enlisted in the army and was sent to Fort Cobb, Indian Territory (now Caddo County, Oklahoma), shortly after the Battle of Washita River, about the same time General Philip Sheridan and Colonel George B. Custer were there.
While at Fort Cobb he was diagnosed with epilepsy and was discharged at Fort Hays, Kansas, in April 1869. He was briefly admitted to the U.S. National Home for Disabled Soldiers in Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1886 but was sent from there to Osawatomie Hospital in Osawatomie, Kansas, where he died in 1890. He was about 39 years old.
