Mary Brewerton Ricketts, only daughter of James Brewerton Ricketts and the former Harriet Josephine Pierce, was born at Fort Fairfield in the Maine frontier on January 3rd 1842. Her father was stationed there during the pending "Disputed Territory" controversy about the Canadian border. Young Mary was named for her maternal grandmother, Mary Brewerton Ricketts.

On September 4th 1860, Mary married William Montrose Graham, a career United States Army officer; who rose to the rank of Brigadier General. They would have six children.
