KATHLEEN JOY 'MOM' NELSON, 47

Kathleen Joy Nelson, "Mom" to one biological daughter and more than 70 foster children, died Monday of cancer.

She was 47.

Mrs. Nelson, a lifelong Hollywood resident who graduated from South Broward High School in 1970, was a foster mother for nine years. She started because she did not think she could have children of her own, said her husband, Sam Nelson. But she continued to take in foster children after giving birth to a girl, Jenna Patricia, in 1991.

"Mrs. Nelson was always there for the children that were placed with her," said Suzanne Zimmer, who handles adoptions and foster care licensing and recruitment for the state Department of Children & Families. Her husband said they sometimes had as many as nine children staying in their three-bedroom ranch-style house. Jenna, 8, often slept in her parents' bedroom, while the rest of the girls slept in one room and the boys slept in the other.

"I used to tell her to stop because I felt it was causing stress in her life," said Linda Falco, one of a small army of family and friends who cared for Mrs. Nelson after she was diagnosed with a brain tumor in July. "But her heart was too big. She couldn't turn the kids away."

Mrs. Nelson had been too weak for the past several months to care for foster children, but she tried to maintain an active role in her daughter's life. She was the president of the Parent Teacher Association at St. Mark's Lutheran School in Hollywood.

And it was a point of pride for her that her third-grade daughter was learning cheers from the Miami Dolphins' cheerleading squad. Mrs. Nelson was a die-hard Dolphins fan who watched the games every Sunday and usually attended three games per season.

"She loved roller coasters and water slide parks. She loved Disney World," Falco said.

Mrs. Nelson and her husband owned a mobile home, and they often took the children in their care on trips to Orlando or the Florida Keys.

This year, Mrs. Nelson planned to travel to New England to see a white Christmas. Her family plans to play Barry Manilow's Weekend in New England at her funeral.

The service is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, 1600 Hollywood Blvd. Family and friends are also invited to a memorial service at 8:45 a.m. on Jan. 5, 2000, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 502 N. 58th Ave., in Hollywood.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the " Kathy Nelson Memorial Fund," c/o St. Mark's Lutheran Church and School, 502 N. 58th Ave., Hollywood, FL. 33020.

In addition to her husband and daughter, Mrs. Nelson is survived by her mother, Mary Krysiak, and a brother, Edward Krysiak, both of Hollywood; and a sister, Marilyn Ruetemann, of Roseland.
