Mrs. Virginia G. Hersperger, 96, of Cumberland Crossings Retirement Community, Carlisle, Pa., formerly of Poolesville, died Wednesday, May 7, at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa. Her husband, Webb Sellman Hersperger, died in 1933.

Born Sept. 10, 1900, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Virginia Grooms Gartrell. She was the llth of 13 siblings, all of whom preceded her in death.

Mrs. Hersperger was a longtime resident of Poolesville and began her teaching career at age 17. Over the course of 42 years, she taught in three one-room schools and became the first elementary principal in Poolesville School. She was a graduate of Sherwood High School in Sandy Springs and attended various colleges and universities. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and past president of the Women of St. Peter's and a member of the Historic Medley District and the Montgomery County Retired Teachers' Association.

Surviving are a son, Dr. Webb S. Hersperger Jr. of Carlisle; three granddaughters, Katherine Hennessy of Marlboro, Mass., Virginia Boynton of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Rebecca Ferguson of Wilmington, Del.; and four greatgrandsons.

Memorial services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 12, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Poolesville. Interment will be in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville. The family will receive friends at the church after the burial.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 385, Poolesville, Md. 20837. Arrangements are by the Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville.
