In the fall of 1903, he, brother Arthur and possible brother Tom, went to the Milestone area in Saskatchewan, Canada, on a harvest excursion.

In 1904, Marshall and Arthur applied for homestead rights for section 22-13-17 W2 located east of Riceton [SK]. July 6, 1905, Marshall was granted homestead entry to the NW¼ of section 22. He was granted patent ownership of this homestead quarter in 1908. It is not known who purchased this quarter from Marshall Sr. At the time Arthur homestead the NE¼ 22-13-17 W2, and Tom Hersberger homesteaded a quarter in section 18-13-15 W3, near Rosetown, Sask.

Marshall, Sr. became a naturalized Canadian in 1905.

They became interested in buying land around Milestone and eventually purchased the NE¼ and S½ 15-12-18 W2 in 1909 from the Canadian Pacific Railway, The Canadian American Land Company, and Charles Williams of Galesburg, Illinois.

In 1910, Marshall returned to Poolesville and married Edna Earle (Davis) and returned to the farm in Milestone, Saskatchewan in 1911.

Marshall Sr. purchased the S½ 15-12-18 W2 from his brother Arthur in December 1916. As a matter of interest, according to the homestead patent, the home buildings consisted of a house valued at $250.00, a stable at $100.00, and five granaries at $250.00. Marshall Sr. continued to farm the land until 1924.

They returned to Poolesville, MD in 1924 when Edna Earle, being her mother's only living daughter, felt the necessity to return to Maryland to care for her aging parents.

Information provided by his granddaughter, Betty Hersberger
