Mrs Elizabeth Lee, widow of Henry Boynton Smith and sister of the late Judge William Allen of Northampton, died Monday at the home of her son-in-law, Rev Dr Charles H McClellan, in Lakewood, N.J. Until recently she had been in good health and vigorous, although in her 82d year. She was out Thanksgiving day, but shortly after she took a severe cold, which developed into bronchitis and proved fatal. Mrs Smith was a member of an old prominent Northampton family, and was well known in the Connecticut valley and in New York and vicinity, where the later years of her life had been spent. She was the wife of Prof Henry Boynton Smith, who was a noted teacher and theologian. Mrs Smith was a woman of strong character and superior intellectual attainments. She was a gifted writer, and many of her sonnets and poems are of much beauty and strength. She was of great aid to her husband during his life, anfter his death she wrote and published a book of memoirs. A small volume of poems from her pen was published for the family and friends. One of her last poems was a tribute to the American soldiers who fell in the Spanish war, and which was recently published in The Republican. Mrs Smith was a woman of much dignity and rare culture, and her company was much sought for by scholars and clergymen. Upon the occasion of a recent visit with her son, Rev Henry G. Smith, at Cincinnati, she was tendered a reception, at which any eminent men were present.
Mrs Smith was born in Hanover, N.H., September 3, 1817, the daughter of Rev Dr William Allen, who was at that time in Dartmouth college. Soon after her birth the family moved to Brunswick, Me., where Rev Dr Allen was for many years president of Bowdoin college. There Mrs Smith spent 20 years of her life, being educated there and at the Ipswich female seminary, conducted by Miss Grant and Miss Lyons. In 1839 the family removed to Northampton, and there, in 1842, she married Mr Smith, who was then a minister in Amesbury. Soon after he went to Amherst college, and after server years became an instructor in Union theological seminary. Mr. Smith died in 1877. Since that time she had lived with her daughter, Mrs McClellan, in Lakewood, N.J. She leaves two sons, William Allen Smith of New York and Rev Henry G. Smith of Lane theological seminary, Cincinnati; and two daughters, Mrs Charles W. Woolsey of Asheville, N.C., and Mrs Charles McClellan. Two sisters also survive, Mrs C F Hopkins and Miss Mary Allen of Northampton.
