Alexander Joseph Bondurant was the son of Thomas Moseley Bondurant and Marcia Louise Moseley Bondurant. He attended both Hampton-Sidney College and the University of Virginia, and later studied abroad in Berlin. On 9 Aug 1859, he married Emily McFarland Morrison, the daughter of Rev. James Morrison and Frances Brown Morrison.

On the 1850 Dist. 2, Buckingham Co., VA census, I found farmer Thos M Bondurant, 53; Martha Bondurant, 50; Bondurant, 18; farmer Lee Bondurant, 16; Alexander Bondurant, 14 and George Bondurant, 12, all "Buckingham" Co., VA born.

On the 1860 Dist. 1, Buckingham Co., VA census, I found farmer Thom M Bondurant, 63, with $250 K in real estate and $19,150 in personal property; Marita L Bondurant, 66; Alexa J Bondurant, 25; Emma Bondurant, 21 and law student George P Bondurant, 21, plus managers Wm H Allen, 28 and Danie Huddleston, 24

On the 1870 Rockfish, Nelson Co., VA census, I found farmer A J Bondurant, 34 with $30K in real estate and $3,209 in personal property; Emily M, 33; Alexander L, 5 and Fannie B, 3, all VA born.

On the 1880 James River, Buckingham Co., VA census, I found farmer A. J. Bondurant, 44; wife Emma Bondurant, 43; sons or daughters: Mag. Bondurant, 9; Jula Bondurant, 7; Sam Bondurant, 6; George Bondurant, 5 and Dabney Bondurant, 1, plus 2 servants, all VA born.

A book by James A Pitman Jr., M.D., called Tinsley R Harrison, M.D., Teacher of Medicine, has a lot of photos and data on the family (Newsouth Books, Montgomery, AL, 2015). Also an article by Susan H Findley, called Alexander J Bondurant: American Agricultural Advisor to Austrailain Tobacco Growers, 1896, pages 125-130, in Agricultural History, Vol. 40, #2, Apr 1966.

The Library of VA holds the 16,000 items in the Bondurant - Morrison Family Papers, 1787 - 1936. A guide to the described collection is online.

Born in Buckingham County, Virginia, member of the Home Guards, Buckingham County, Virginia, CSA, "Father." Source of burial data: Rockbridge County, Virginia Cemeteries, South River and Walker Creek Districts, by the Rockbridge Area Genealogical Society, 1999, page 159.

His death notice was in the 8 Mar 1910 issue of the Atlanta Constitution. Lynchburg, VA, Alexander J Bondurant of Buckingham County, VA died on March 7th, of appendicitis. He served in the Civil War in Mahone's Brigade. He was a tobacco expert in Victoria, Australia during 1896 - 1901. Returning to America, he was employed at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (AKA Agricultural and Mechanical College of AL). His wife of 50 years survives, along with sons A L Bondurant, professor of Latin at Mississippi University and G P Bonderant, an attorney at Birmingham, Alabama.
