John W. Benninga was born Jan. 10, 1840 in Manschlag, near Emden, Ostriesland. When 24 years of age he came to America and first located in Illinois. He came to Kansas in 1870 and homesteaded the farm on which he lived up to the time of his death, which occurred on Jan. 31, 1930, at the age of 90 years and 21 days.
The deceased was married to Dena Heikes on Dec. 12, 1872. To this union four daughters, and one son were born, all of whom survive him. He is also survived by one sister, one brother and one sister having preceded him in death. His companion died 33 years ago.
The children are Miss Anna, Mrs. L.E. Meenen, Mrs. J.H. Meenen of Clifton, Kansas, Mrs. O.W. Koerber of Aurora, Kansas, and Edward of Riley. There are 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Mr. Benninga was a charter member of the Fairview Presbyterian church and attended church regularly until failing health would not permit. Since then he has been a great reader and spent most of his time reading.
His passing removes another of the old settlers of this section of the country who had witnessed and passed through the hardships and deprivations so common to the early pioneers of Kansas.
Owing to the illness of Rev. Roos, pastor of the Fairview church, the funeral services were conducted by Rev. P.B. Nuffer at the Evangelical church in Leonardville on Sunday afternoon. Burial was at the Fairview cemetery.
