Son of James Westley McAnally & Elizabeth Mitchell. He was three years old when his parents moved to Dunklin Co, MO, near Vincit. He attended the little old log cabin school near Vincit. His father died when he was eight years old, and his mother died three years later. He made his home with his brother, James D., for several years, during which time he studies the medicine. but, not finding the profession to his liking, he never went into practice. He m/1 Donna Hale 7 Feb 1884 and had ten children, five surviving: Edward Davis, Mamie, Thomas D, Mary Belle, and Pearl. He m/2 Carrie Buckner 1899 and had Ruth, Dee, Trible, Alton B, Zada, James F, Kitty, Byron T, and Paul Buchard.
