Peter Maurer was born in France. Peter and his wife Mary Sommer Maurer, were married in France in 1825, they immigrated from Alsace, France to Butler County, Ohio in 1830. Peter was a farmer, and they were the first recorded Amish family that settled in Danvers TWP., 5 Miles North of Danvers, Illinois, in the year 1837.

Peter Maurer purchased 160 acres from Isaac and Polly Stout in sections 26 and 27 of McLean County. Today, County Road 75N separates this land which is southeast of Congerville. About 1843, Peter provided a small plot of land for a cemetery and its earliest burial on May 10, 1843 was that of Johannes Gerber. In 1873 Peter died, his wife Mary lived until 1880, and both share a common grave stone in the cemetery.

Mary and Peter's children were: Joseph Peter Maurer 1824–1874, he married Fanny Mae Mosiman, Barbara Maurer 1826–1830, she died on the way to the United States, Magdalena Maurer 1827–1840, Mary Maurer 1828–1849, she married Jacob Donner, Christian Maurer 1828–1898, he never married, Anna Maurer 1833–1840, Peter Maurer 1837-, it's unsure who he married, John Maurer 1839 –, he married Madeline Peter, and Catherine Maurer 1841–1910, who married her cousin Jacob Maurer. (Jacob 'Mourer' is listed in the Woodford County 1878 directory as farmer in Montgomery TWP., P.O. Oak Grove, Illinois. Jacob was a staunch democrat).
