"Death of Mrs. Joseph Cooke"
"Miss Marietta Swank was born in Canfield, Feb. 21, 1839. She was married to Joseph Cooke Nov. 17, 1867. Shortly thereafter they removed to Ft. Scott where they resided until 1873 when they removed to Bronson, Kan., where they have since resided. Death was the result of paralysis with which she has been a sufferer for a number of years. She has been very feeble since her first stroke about three years ago, but kind attention and expert medical treatment succeeded in restoring her health partially until last April when she sustained a second attack which left her even more feeble. Friday she suffered the third and fatal
stroke and on Sunday evening, Oct. 29, 1905, as the sun was sinking in the west her sweet spirit took flight. Sister Cooke was a lovable spirit and was always thoughtful of others' needs and comfort. She was a woman of rare talent and sweet disposition. The horizon of her thought was by no means limited but she took great interest in current events, was very patriotic and interested in all
mankind. It was my very great privilege to minister to her spiritual wants during her recent illness and I always found her cheerful, hopeful and kind.
With her husband she united with the Presbyterian church at Ft. Scott in 1871 to which faith she remained true to the end. She was a firm believer in God, a lover of His Son and His Word, often times telling me what a comfort "The Book"
was to her. Sweet privilege to read it to her and note how she drank of the deep things of God. While Sister Cooke was not permitted because of her condition of late years to be out in society, yet her presence seemed to be among us
everywhere and she will be missed by the entire community for her cheering words and kindness of heart which found expression in loving deeds. She leaves her husband and daughter, Margaret, who will have the sympathy of nnumbered
friends, but best of all the comfort of Him "who doeth all things well. Rev. J. B. Mackenzie"
