Pvt. Laverne Dawson, 22, of Meadville, Is Killed in Korea

Mrs. Floyd Dawson of Meadville has received word that her son, Laverne, was killed in Korea October 18. Pvt. Laverne Dawson was 22 years old, son of Mrs. Dawson and the late Floyd Dawson. He entered the U.S. Army in February, 1952, was home on furlough in July and sent on to Korea soon after. He was with the 32nd Infantry. His father was a veteran of World War I and died in 1938. Private Dawson is survived by his mother; four brothers and three sisters, Francis Midgyett of Chillicothe; Floyd Dawson, Jr., Alton, Ill.; Theresa, St. Louis; Bebe of Keytesville, and William, Kenneth and Mary of the home. Military funeral services for Pvt. LaVerne Dawson, 22, who died in Korea October 18, were held from the Methodist Church of Meadville Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Isaac H. Harris, pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist church, assisted by the Rev. William A. Pollock, pastor of the Meadville Methodist Church, conducted the memorial services. Interment was made in the Dawson lot in the Meadville Cemetery, under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home. Myrtle Fraier, Clementine Bland, Anna E. Botts, Effie Brown, Eula Parer, and Mary Johnson compsed the Mt. Zion choir thatsang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," "That Uncluded Day" and "Nearer My God To Thee." Mrs. Doris Stewart was the accompanist. Members of the Jesse Wolfscale post of the American Legion No. 160 were the pallbearers. They were Charles Crain, Marvin Palmer, Leroy Pettigrew, Marvel Winfrey, Shelton Rucker and Raymond Kitchen. Commander of Post No. 160 is Shelton Rucker. Members of the Williams-DeMoss Post No. 517 of the American Legion form Meadville served as color guards, Bill Collis, and Meryl Surber; color bearers, Aubrey Gooch, and Clifford Caldwell. The firing squad members were Raymond Martens, Cleo Martens, Basil Stratton, Bud Cook, Elgin Tracy, C. C. Wilburn, Jr., and Virgil Kennedy, officer in charge. Ben Jackson was the chaplin. Mrs. Floyd Dawson of Meadville has received word that her son, Laverne, was killed in Korea October 18. Pvt. Laverne Dawson was 22 years old, son of Mrs. Dawson and the late Floyd Dawson.
