Only daughter and the younger of the two surviving children of Michel Justin and Eulalie Louise (Testot) DUVIGNEAUD. Lise was only three years old in July of 1841 when her parents separated, and she was taken by her mother from Paris to Berlin to start-up another household and her own stationery shop. Lise was left in the care of a German family for three years while her mother pursued her affairs. In 1847, Lise's mother, Eulalie, returned to Paris and left Lise (age 8) with her father, Rene Testot, who then returned her to Michel Justin. At that time Lise was reintroduced to her father and elder brother, Alfred, neither of whom had she any memory. The household to which she returned now included a step-mother, Marie-Caroline Desiree Evrard, and a new half brother, Justin Edouard.

In 1852 the family, including 'Desiree's parents and brother, left France for America, initially with plans to establish themselves in New York but eventually 'landing' in Pewaukee, Waukesha, Wisconsin.
