Donald Holmstrom, 75, died on Friday, December 31, 2010 at Sanford Medical Center in Thief River Falls, MN.
Donald Vance Holmstrom was born September 25, 1935 at home on the farm near Strandquist to Victor and Pearl (Swedberg). He was baptized and confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church of Newfolden. He attended the Oak Ridge Country School and one year of high school in Strandquist.
He worked at Armor Meats in South St. Paul and the Ford Plant in St. Paul. Donald was married to his wife on June 15, 1957, in St. Paul. They made their home in St. Paul until the fall of 1960 when they moved to a farm near Strandquist. Donald farmed grain and dairy with his twin brother. He also worked road construction for Ehrenstrom Construction. He worked at Arctic Cat in Karlstad and Thief River Falls. In his later years, he sold the land and bought the Northwest House Moving business.
Some of Donald's favorite pastimes included hunting with his brothers, gardening and watching the birds. He was an avid fisherman and the lake cabin at Lake of the Woods at Hideaway Acres north of Springsteel was always a highlight for Don and his family. Donald loved to play practical jokes and telling stories. He was a proud lifetime member of the Eagles Club. Donald enjoyed cooking barbecued pork for several different occasions and making homemade sausage of all kinds.
Don is survived by his wife, 4 daughters: 9 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, twin brother, 5 sisters, and several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Leonard Holmstrom, 2 grandsons, Jeremy Severson, Chad Nelson and father-in-law, Stanley Szczepanski.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, January 5, 2010 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Strandquist, MN with Rev. Curtis Matz officiating.
Burial will be in St. Edwards Cemetery, Lincoln Township, Marshall Co., MN., in the spring.
Visitation will be from 5-8 PM, Tuesday, January 4, 2010 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, MN with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM with Father Rick Lambert presiding. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Wednesday.
