Mary Ann Halvorsen Brandenburg passed from this life on Friday (Jan. 8, 2010) at the home of her daughter, following a courageous battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cancer.

She was born April 15, 1927, in Chicago, the daughter of Harry I. and Mildred C. Darress Halvorsen. She lived in Chicago all of her childhood until moving to Galesburg to attend Knox College. It was at Knox College that she met and married Wayne R. Brandenburg on Sept. 3, 1948. They were later divorced. Mary was a first-grade teacher for District 111 schools in Kankakee for more than 30 years. She strove to make education an enjoyable experience for her students.

Surviving are her daughter, Maggie (Bill) Taylor of Ogden, Utah; two granddaughters, Jennifer (Shane) Kimball of Syracuse, Utah, Kimberly Stein of Portland, Ore.; two stepgrandsons, Brian Taylor of Alfred, N.Y., Scott Taylor of Salt Lake City, Utah; one stepgranddaughter, Kelly Taylor of Oakland, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff of Alpine Hospice, especially Andrea, Lorraine, Fred, Bruce and Dr. Reis for all the loving care and support they gave mom over the past 18 months. She loved you all!

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., Ogden. Family and friends may call at the mortuary from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Friday. Interment will be in Lindquist's Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., Ogden.
