He was born Oct. 22, 1924 in Gainesville, Ga., to Wilburn and Ethel Burnett. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II, having served on the USS Curtis in the Pacific Theatre. He was also a charter member of St. Augustine Baptist Church. He enjoyed the family tree, fishing and his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ilene Burnett; brother, James Burnett; son, David Burnett; daughter, Jane Burnett, and his parents, Wilburn and Ethel Burnett.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Evelyn Burnett; daughters, Linda (Bill) Bement, Beverly (Scott) Phillips and Lois (Charlie) Burrell; sons, John W. (Charlene) Burnett Sr., Don (Elaine) Burnett, Mary K. (Harry) Colley, Tom (Lisa) Burnett, Stephen (Joy) Burnett, Deborah (Billy) Masters, Becky (Mark) Nixon and Nancy Burnett; 31 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Joyce (Clyde) Bailey, and brothers, Robert (Sarah) and Paul (Barbara) Burnett. Funeral service will be Sunday, June 18, at Zion Baptist Church in Suches, Ga. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
