Charlotte was the first child born to Isaac Leighton and Permelia Lancaster. She was born in Maine, lived in Cattaraugus Co., New York and then arrived in Iowa with her parents and 2 siblings when she was not yet 10 years old.

She married Elhanan W. Carpenter [son of Jesse Knight Carpenter and Mary Polly Beckwith] on June 8, 1856. The couple is shown in the 1856 Iowa census and then again in the 1860 Federal Census [Lime Creek Twp], he as 24, she as 23 with two daughters, 3 and 1.

In the 1870 Federal census, Lime Creek Twp., shows 4 more children and [presumably] the addition of Elhanan's parents, Jesse K, [b. 1794, Vermont] and Mary [b 1800, Vermont] living with them.

The 1880 Federal census shows them with 6 children and only Jesse, Elhanan's father is living with them.

In the March 25, 1885 edition of the "Washington Democrat" newspaper, it was noted that the Carpenters had sold their farm and were moving to Nebraska to homestead. This was just days after their 15-year-old daughter, Annettie died.

The 1900 Federal census finds Elhanan and Charlotte in Dry Creek, Dawes County, Nebraska. Their children who are now married and in their own homes but living next door are Mariam, Stephen and Edwin.

The children: Mariam M. [1857]; Martha M. [1859]; Mary P. [1861-1897]; Stephen Winchester [1864]; Edwin Francis [1867]; Annettie [1869-1885]; Daniel W. [1872-1874]; Della E. [1874].

Cemetery records show that within the same plot with Elhanan and Charlotte, there are two females: daughter Mary P. and a Lois Carpenter. No records could be found to identify Lois as a daughter, daughter-in-law or granddaughter.

The two children who died young, Annette and Daniel, are buried in Wassonville Cemetery in Washington County, Iowa.
