Montana/California artist. Mary Cecilia Wheeler was born January 6, 1859, in Columbus, Ohio...Daughter of William F & Charlotte J Wheeler. She was one of the three members of the Class of 1879 (the 1st Graduating Class) at Helena H.S. She studied in the East, as well as in Paris and Russia before opening a Studio in Helena. She eventually became more interested in painting Western landscapes and mountains than her earlier portraits and figure studies. She was enterprising and courageous in seeking out precarious painting spots.

Lived in La Jolla CA at the time of her death in 1934, but actually passed away on a visit in Helena MT, where she was interred with her parents and brother Henry at Forestvale Cemetery.
