John William Bauer was born to George Ernst Bauer and Ella Ruby (Mill) Bauer on May 17, 1907. He was born on the property now known as the Old Smokey Kaplin Place near Plaza, Washington. The house still stands as of summer 2016.

John Bauer's birth was hard and the attending physician from Rosalia, Washington resorted to using forceps. The doctor was young and inexperienced. Ella Ruby Bauer hemorrhaged to death early May 18, 1907. The Mill Family visited the house daily after Johnny's birth to help George Bauer take care of young Johnny Bauer.

Prior to the harvest of 1907 Emma Catherine (Forsyth) Mill rode on horse back to the home of George Bauer. George Bauer's place was only a few hills east of the Mill Farm. After a short visit Emma Mill got back on her horse and George Bauer handed her Johnny Bauer in a shoe box. She rode for home. The Mill family called him Johnny Bauer.

Johnny Bauer was raised by the Mill family including his Grandpa John Robert Mill, Grandma Emma Catherine Mill, Uncles Roy, Boone, Robert, Perry and Aunt Mary Mill. Johnny Bauer's Grandpa John Mill died in 1912 so this left raising Johnny to his Grandma Emma and John Mill's kids.

Johnny Bauer's closest childhood friend was his cousin Albert John Babb, the son of his Uncle A.M. Babb and Aunt Mary (Mill) Babb.

Johnny Bauer attended school at Wright School near the corner of Pine Grove Road and Wells Road in Cheney, Washington. When Johnny was fifteen he left school to work on the family homestead for his Uncle Robert "Shorty" and Grandma Emma Mill.

In 1927 he married Maidie Victoria Norton who lived on the bluffs of Badger Lake, Washington. Johnny and Maidie Bauer had three children, Paulene May, Valdean Florence and Robert Lee.

Johnny Bauer lived in his grandfather's house until the spring of 1954 when his son Lee and his family moved in. Johnny Bauer then moved into his Uncle Robert Mill's house. In 1963, after losing his daughter Paulene and son Lee to death he sold his part of the Mill Homestead and bought a cattle ranch near Spangle, Washington. Johnny lived there until around 1969 when he retired and moved into Spangle, Washington where he lived until called Home on September 17, 1976.

John William Bauer's mother was a Pioneer of the Washington territory. John Bauer was a hard working farmer.
