Funeral services for James E. Smead Jr., 62, Moline, are 10 AM Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Moline, where he was a member. Burial is in Moline Memorial Park Cemetery, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct military honors. Visitation is 3-7 PM Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, IL. A memorial fund has been established. Jim died Friday, April 25, 2008 at Genesis Medical Center-Illini Campus, Silvis. He was born September 24, 1945 in Moline, the son of James E and Pearl (Peterson) Smead Sr. Jim graduated from Moline High School Class of 1963. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam Era. He married Dorothy Smith on October 25, 1969 at First Lutheran Church. Mr. Smead worked maintenance for John Deere, starting at the Mallable and retiring from the Foundry after 30+ years. Jim was a die-hard Moline Maroon and Chicago Cub Fan. He was a member of the First Lutheran Churchmen, the Moline Viking's Club, and UAW local 81. Hunting, fishing, bowling and recently golf helped to fill Jim's spare time, but he truly enjoyed travelling with his wife of 38 1/2 years Dorothy. Survivors include his wife, daughter and son-in-law Kelly and John Carothers, Rock Island, his son Mark Smead, Moline, grandchildren and spouses; Chelsea Herrera, Alison Carothers, John (Noelle) Carothers, Jr., Michelle (Ben) McAfee and Nicole (Trevor) Lindsey, six great-grandchildren, his mother Pearl Smead, Moline, sisters and brother-in-law Pat and Kenny Reveal, Rapids City, IL, and Marie Weber, Cambridge, IL, and a brother Percy Smead, Moline. His father and an infant daughter Kathy Jo preceded him in death.
