JOHN C PETERS SUCCUMBS TODAY = WAS PRESIDENT OF HORTON MANUFACTURING COMPANY AND OF THE PETERS HOTEL CO - ILL HEALTH FOR ONE YEAR

John C Peters, aged 74, a life-long resident and prominent business man of this city, died at 4:15 o'clock this morning, at the home, 332 West Wayne street. He had been in poor health for the last year, due to a complication of diseases. Mr Peters was president of the Horton Manufacturing Company and of the Peters Hotel Company, owner of the Wayne Hotel in this city. He was also a Director of the Old National Bank and was identified with many other business houses of the city.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs Mary Peters; four sons, FC , Arthur H, William F, and Paul W all living in this city; and three daughters Mrs Philip E Bursley and Mrs Arthur Boak, of Ann Arbor Michigan and Mrs Neil Aldrich McKay of this city. Two brothers, Henry C Paul and Charles Paul and three sisters, Mrs Caroline Storm, Mrs Charlotte Kern and Mrs Henry Lepper also survive.The funeral services will be held from the home at 3:30 o'clock Monday afternoon with the Rev William E Moll officiating. Private burial will be made at Lindenwood cemetery.

BORN IN FORT WAYNE his various enterprises, Mr Peters contributed in a large measure to the advancement of Fort Wayne. He was born in this city June 11, 1848, son of Claus and Caroline (Eberlein) Peters who came to Fort Wayne in 1841 from Germany, their native land. The father who was born in 1813 followed in this city the occupation of builder and contractor until his death in 1849. John C Peters received his early education in this city, and then in 1862 began learning the trade of piano and cabinet-maker at which he was occupied for four years from 1865 to 1869 in New York City.

In 1873, he was married to Mary Myers of Fort Wayne, daughter of Frederick Myers. To this union were born eight children, Frederick, William, Otto, Arthur, Paul, Flora, Helen and Bertha. Mr Peters was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran church. He had risen to an honorable place among the foremost citizens of Fort Wayne by his character as a man, his unfailing reliability as a business man and his energy and enterprise as a manufacturer.

Mr Peters started in the hardwood lumber business in 1872. Some years later he became manager of the Horton Manufacturing Company which was incorporated in 1883 with a capital stock of $30,000. Today, the Horton Company is one of the leading industries in the city. Mr Peters was also a partner prior to 1873 with Charles Paper and Joseph Schaffer in the Peters Box and Lumber Company. He was also president of the Indiana Machine Works, a company organized and incorporated in 1887. Mr Peters built the Wayne Hotel in 1887 and personally managed the institution for a number of years.
