William Dayton Potter was born in Canada in 1819 during a thirteen year period his American parents spent in Canada. His parents, Samuel Potter and Thankful Smith, were born in Connecticut and had moved to Canada from New York around 1810. The family returned to New York about 1823 and William Dayton Potter was raised in Constantia, Oswego, New York on Oneida Lake. William married Elizabeth Burr in Otsego, NY in 1844 and they had two sons, Gideon and Foster F. Potter. Following the death of Elizabeth Burr Potter in 1854, William D Potter married Catherine Cherry, who had one son, John Edward, who William adopted. William and Catherine had five more children. They had two daughters, Georgianna and Maud; and three sons, Charles William, Frederick, and Benjamin Dayton. This brought to eight the combined families of William Dayton Potter and Catherine Cherry Potter. When William died in 1877, his oldest son Gideon was 31 years old and married; while his youngest child, Benjamin was only two years old.
