Howell Gray Whitehead Jr. was born 1839 in Pactolus, Pitt County, NC, the 6th of 7 known surviving children (4 boys/3 girls) born to farmers Howell Gray Whitehead, Sr. and his (1st) wife, Elizabeth Clark.

He was the paternal grandson of Joseph Whitehead III and Sarah "Sallie" Gray of Halifax/Edgecombe Co; and gr-grandson of Joseph Whitehead II and Pheraby Applewaite/Applewhite of Halifax Co. He is a direct descendant of Arthur Whitehead of Isle of Wight, VA, whose grandson, Col. William Whitehead first came to Edgecombe Co, NC in the early 1700's. On his mother's side he was the maternal grandchild of James Sampson Clark Sr. of Isle of Wight VA who came to Pitt Co, NC and married Winifred Hardy.

When Civil War was declared in April 1861, both Howell (age 22) and his older brother, James Samuel Whitehead (age 25), enlisted with the NC 55th Regiment. James became Major of Company E, while Howell rose to the rank of Captain serving under him. James was captured defending Cape Hatteras and spent 16 months as a POW in Ft. Warren where his health deteriorated. Released in February 1862, he died 6 months later at age 27. Howell, Jr. was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg and also captured and was detained as a prisoner ofwar on Johnson's Island in Lake Erie until after
the close of the war.

Following the war, Howell returned to Pitt County and resumed farming with his father. In 1869, the 30-yr old married 23-yr old Mary Jane Bynum, daughter of Col. Robert Bynum (deceased).

The couple would have 5 known surviving children (4 boys/1 girl) - all buried here: Robert Bynum Whitehead, Lucy J. Clark Whitehead, Howell Gray Whitehead, III, William B. Whitehead, and James Samuel Whitehead.

Howell G. Whitehead Jr. died in 1887 at the young age of 47. His wife of 18 years only survived him 2 years, passing in 1889 at age 42.
