"He came to Hutton Township, Coles County, IL in 1829, with his parents, William H. Stewart and Dicy Haynes Stewart. The story goes that John H. Stewart accompanied his elderly grandmother Patience Stewart from Kentucky to Coles County. Supposedly John H. Stewart proposed to a Boyer girl, and when she refused his offer of marriage he asked her sister, Tillie. Matilda Ann Boyer, called Tillie, did accept."

John H. Stewart

John H. Stewart, an aged citizen of Hutton township, died Monday morning at 6:45 o'clock. The deceased was 88 years old on the 29th of January, and was in town on business, in company with two daughters, only about a week before his death.

Mr. Stewart came to Coles county with his parents when quite young. At the age of 21 he married Matilda Bowyer. He is survived by one brother, William, of Charleston. He is survived by the following sons and daughters: Anderson and Joseph of Westfield; Harvey of Charleston, Mrs. E. J. Waltrip of Charleston, Mrs. Rebecca Goble, Mrs. Ella Parker, Mrs. Cena Goble, Miss Dicy Stewart, of Westfield; and Mrs. Underwood, of Clairmont.

Mr. Stewart lived to see 5 generation,(sic) namely, 56 grandchildren. 26 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren.

In early life he united with the U. B. Church, but later transferred his membership to the Missionary Baptist Church at Good Hope, 1 1/2 miles south west of town.

He was active in the welfare of that church, and during the building of the new church house at Westfield, contributed liberally of his own means and solicited others to help, as their means would allow. His christian life was true to his belief. No one could say aught against "Uncle" John Stewart.

The funeral was held Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock at Liberty church and interment made in the nearby cemetery."
