After the death of her son Walter, Cora made a conscious decision not to have anymore children due to the hereditary nature of her diabetes - type 1. After Homer (Dick) died in 1959, Cora rarely left her home, and lived with the blinds drawn. She also suffered from allergies, which may have accounted for her reclusiveness.
Chico Enterprise Record, January 27, 1996: "Cora Coon. A graveside service for longtime local resident Cora Mae Coon, 98, of Chico, will take place at 2 p.m. Monday in Chico Cemetery. She died Thursday, Jan. 25, 1996, in a local convalescent hospital. Mrs. Coon was born Aug. 24 1897, in Confidence to Willis and Flora Hiatt. She attended Chico schools and married Homer "Dick" Coon in 1917. She loved making a home for her family. Mrs. Hiatt was widowed in 1959. Memorial contributions may be made to the Durham Volunteer Fire Department, in care of Brusie Funeral Home."
