He was called "Steve". His actual given name was Arl Wesley, although the first name can be found spelled at least two ways. "Arl" is a family name on his mother's side and appears in family records. His gravestone has the name "Oral", the name that appears on his service records. On his World War I draft registration card his signature is "Orl Wesley Mullies". He reported that he was born in Hume, Missouri, and that his occupation was "Coal Miner & Fireman for the Hamilton Coal Co. in Hume."

Steve married Mary Ann Morrison from Barton County, Missouri about 1913. They were divorced before 1917. There were no children.

His sister Ruth Mullis Arnold wrote "Steve enlisted in the army during the world war in 1917, and served in France in the Engineer Corps. He returned home in 1919." His service records say "Served overseas from 16 August 1918 to June 6, 1919. Honorable discharge, no disability." He was in the 313th Engineers, attached to the 88th Infantry Division. It was engaged in the Alsace Front.

Steve was a golden gloves boxer. His nephew Merle Mullis told the writer of this biography that "Steve was a scrapper".

In his later years he ran a hotel - an address book from the early 1950's says "Hotel Meridith, Lawrence, Kansas".
