Elsie was the daughter of Thomas Edward Burkhead and Annie Edward Wilkerson. She grew up in Barboursville, VA, attended Radford College and married neighbor Harold Lee Herndon. They raised two daughters, Ramona Herndon Gardner and Ann Herndon Wyker in Richmond, VA. Elsie was a long-time employee of Miller & Rhoads department store in Richmond. At the time of her death she and her third husband, Eddie Potts, lived in Urbanna, VA and had five granddaughters (Linda, Susan, Elizabeth, Kimberly and Donna) and three great grandchildren (Jason, Kelly, and Heather).
