Edwin R.Stephenson murdered Father James E.Coyle on August 11,1921.Enraged that his daughter Ruth,had converted to Catholicism,and that Father Coyle had married his daughter Ruth to a Puerto Rican man named Pedro Gussman;he walked up to the porch of the rectory at St.Pauls where Fr.Coyle was sitting and shot him multiple times.Fr.Coyle died hours later at St.Vincents hospital.The trial that followed was full of racially biased evidence.Mr.Stephenson would be aquitted.Ironically,Edwin Stephenson,and Pedro Gussman are buried in the same cemetery,while his wife Mary,Ruth,and Father Coyle are buried at Elmwood Cemetery-Birmingham,Alabama.
