"James Buford represented Giles County in the State House; 23rd and 24th General Assemblies, 1839-43. He was a Democrat. He was born in Brunswick Parish, Lunenburg County VA, on 30 DEC 1784; the son of James and Priscilla (Ragsdale) Buford. The extent of schooling is not determined. He married Mary Polly Giddens on 8 OCT 1812; and had the following children: Thomas J., Albert, Eliza, William, James III, and Margaret. He came with his father from Virginia to Williamson County TN in 1807; and settled two years later on land in Giles County, which was given him by his father.


That place was known as Buford Station. He was Deputy, then elected Sheriff of Giles County, 1810-14. He was commissioned a major in the Volunteer Rifle Co., 37th Regiment (Giles County) Tennessee Militia [War of 1812]. And he was a member of the Baptist Church. He established one of two cotton mills in Giles County. This was important to the county's economy."
