Willard Milton "Bill" Fager, 93, of Idaho Falls, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010 at Bonaventure.

He was born in Lamar, Nebraska on May 10, 1917, to David Milton and Emma Kathryn Schmitt Fager. Bill grew up as a farm boy and outdoorsman in Durango, CO. He graduated from Durango High School in 1935.

In 1938, he moved to Idaho Falls to work as a carpenter with his brother Larry, and in 1941, Bill moved to Los Angeles with his brother, John, to attend aircraft engineering school.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in December 1941. He became an 8th Air Force master sergeant and crew chief on B-24 Liberators and B-17 Flying Fortresses. Leading his ground crew to an unbroken string of 70 combat missions without an abort earned him a Bronze Star.

On May 10, 1947 he married Roxie Louise Williams in Idaho Falls. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on June 17, 1970.

Bill retired as a captain from the Idaho Falls Fire Department in 1979. He also spent more than 55 years as a carpenter.

Bill loved lively music and dance, and he and Roxie were longtime members of local dance groups. Bill was a member of the Old Time Fiddlers and for more than 30 years, he entertained the elderly in assisted living centers, playing the piano and harmonica.

He will be remembered as a humble and honest seeker of truth, as a friendly man with many friends and as one prepared to stand for the right, come what may.

Bill is survived by his wife, Roxie Fager; children: Louise (Maurice) Ohumukini, Gregg (Trudena) Fager, Vance (Diane) Fager, Kirsten Fager, Ann (Scott) Driggs and Maureen Wallace; 24 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eileen Fager Jimmerfield.

Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by three brothers; five sisters; and a son-in-law, Bryce Wallace.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, at the Idaho Falls LDS Central Stake Center, 2025 Jennie Lee Drive in Idaho Falls, with President Mark Paulsen officiating. The family will visit with friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St. in Idaho Falls, and from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Friday at the stake center prior to the services.

Burial will be in Shelley-Hillcrest Cemetery, where military rites will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Team and the Idaho Honor Guard. The Idaho Falls Fire Department Honor Guard and Pipes and Drums will pay tribute.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites contributions to a charity of your choice.
