John Richard "Dick" Prest, 83, of Seal Rock died at his home on May 15, 2004, of complications related to cancer.
He was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Astoria to Grace Evelyn (Neil) and John Jasper Prest. He was raised on a dairy farm in Chinook, Wash.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1942 to 1945 and was stationed primarily in the South Pacific during World War II as an aircraft mechanic and enemy artillery observer. He achieved the rank of corporal and was awarded a Purple Heart.
He worked for Chinook Packing Company and Chicona Farms, both in Washington, before moving to Newport in 1957.
He married Evelyn J. Taylor of Chinook, Wash., on Aug. 28, 1958, in Newport.
He was a refrigeration and maintenance engineer for New England Fish Co.-Snow Mist in Newport for 26 years until his retirement in 1984.
He maintained a farm on Beaver Creek.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, clamming, agate hunting, and storytelling. He was a member of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Posse for many years and enjoyed raising, training and riding horses.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Laurence Prest and Don Prest, all of Chinook, Wash.
