Funeral services for Virgil Roland Sparkman, 85, of Athens, will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens, with the Rev. Larry Fondren, pastor of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was at Modoc Cemetery in Athens.

Virgil was born Oct. 2, 1925 in Mildred, to William and Mollie Moore Sparkman.

He married Georgia Vivian Miller on Sept. 5, 1953 in Arlington. Virgil lived in this area in the late 1940s, and moved back in 1996 from Arlington. He worked for General Motors for 43 years, and loved to deer hunt and eat barbecue, no matter how far he had to drive to get it.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Georgia Vivian Sparkman; daughter, Jeanie Rene Sparkman; sisters, Pauline Massengale, Oneta Sparkman; brothers, Buford Sparkman and Bill Sparkman.

Virgil is survived by one son, William Bradley Sparkman of Arlington; and one grandchild, Sufiya Rene Sparkman.

Pallbearers were Barrett Kirk, James Cox, John Kirk, James Plaster, Travis Mason, and Randy Miller.
