HAHN, Philip ~~ CIVIL WAR VETERAN ~~
1841 - 1 Sep 1914
Grandview Grandview Twp. Louisa Lot 15;
GAR Marker

WIFE: LEAH
----------------------
In 1862, he was a resident of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and may have been a student at Millersville State Normal School (today's Millersville University), although that is as yet unverified.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Bainbridge, Lancaster County, August 5, 1862, mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 11 as a private with Co. E, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 24, 1864, as a private with Co. K, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged May 29, 1865.

[NOTE not for publication: His pension is on my list to be read in the coming weeks and/or months. I will get back to you after reading it.]
----------------------
Born in Westhofen, Germany (which one is unknown), in 1860 he was a laborer - and later a cooper - presumably living somewhere in or near Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, most likely in Conoy Township, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Bainbridge, Conoy Township, Lancaster County, August 5, 1862, at the stated age of twenty-one, mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 11 as a private with Co. E, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 24, 1864, as a private with Co. K, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa). Succumbing to the omnipresent disease of dysentery, he was admitted to a hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for treatment and again at "a small hospital" in Marietta, Georgia. Neither of those facilities had any knowledge that could stem the disease, and he honorably discharged by general order May 29, 1865, returning home to a lifetime of struggle with the disease.

Between enlistments, he married York County-born Leah Hoff August 4, 1864, in Lancaster and fathered Elizabeth (b. 06/03/67 - married William Harvey Duer), Mary H. (b. 05/26/70 - married John P. Kemp), Charles (b. 12/25/72), William (b. 09/26/75), and Frederick (b. 09/14/83). In 1869, he relocated his family to Louisa County, iowa, where he remained until his death.

Although his tombstone claims he was born in 1841, that is almost certainly not true. His pension several times lists his birth date, and it is always 1840. His death certificate, a copy of which is found in his pension file, confirms that birth year, and an October 1840 birth matches his stated age at enlistment.
