She was the paternal grandchild of Howell Gray Whitehead, Sr. and his (1st) wife, Elizabeth Clark; and gr-grandchild of Joseph Whitehead III and Sarah "Sallie" Gray of Halifax/Edgecombe Co. She is a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Arthur Whitehead of Isle of Wight, VA, whose grandson, Col. William Whitehead first came to Edgecombe Co, NC in the early 1700's.
Sudie was about 23 years old when she married (about 1877) to James E. Clark of Wilson, a cotton dealer. The couple would have 4 known children, 2 of whom died in infancy: Infant Clark (1878-1878), Gladys V. Clark (1880-1944), Olzie M. Clark (1882-1883) and Olzie Whitehead Clark (1884-1971). For a time (ca. 1880) the Clarks resided in Brooklyn, NY where James' business took him closer to the cotton-brokers in New York.
Both Sudie and James Clark died young. Sudie passed in 1890 at age 36, and her husband passed 4 years later in 1894 at age 45. Their two surviving children, Gladys and Olzie, where only aged 14 and 10 respectively, when orphaned in 1894. It is believed their maternal grandmother, Olzie Whitehead Williams, raised them to maturity.
Both girls later married. Gladys married Henry Campbell Dance in 1900 and had 7 children. She is buried here in Maplewood.
Olzie Whitehead Clark married Dr. John Croom Rodman and removed to his hometown of Washington, Beaufort County, NC, where she became mother to 7 known children. She is buried with her husband in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington. [Memorial #63563360.]
