Malinda Mason Hammond was the daughter of Hinsdale Hamant (1761–1841) and Lucy (Mason) Hamant (1764–1850).

She was married to James Sweet Gardner (1793–1846) about 1819 in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts. About 1867 the widowed Malinda married again, this time to Samuel J Gray (1793– ). She lived with him only a couple of years until she was no longer able to keep house. She then went to live with one of her children.
