Alvis Clyde Story came to the rescue and helped save our schools. In the 1940's, the state wanted to close small school districts like Allen. People in Allen didn't want to travel to other towns to go to school. They wanted to keep their own schools so Alvis Story and others went to Austin to lobby to keep our school district. Mr. Story volunteered to pick up all school children on the bus to bring them to school. This was just another example of him caring about the community.
Mr. Story was a young man during the Great Depression and had many jobs. He and his family farmed near what is now McDermott and Custer Roads. Because farm life was hard, Mr. Story was only able to complete the eighth grade. At different times he was a butcher, bank clerk, bus driver, mail carrier, and store clerk. He also served the city by volunteering as City Secretary, Board of Trustees for Allen ISD, Board of Trustees at his church, song leader, volunteer firefighter and bus driver for athletic events.
Mr. Story was born in 1901. He had two sisters and three brothers. His supportive wife, Roberta Miller Story, cooked his favorite foods, boiled okra and chocolate pie. Together they raised two fantastic children, Chester and June, who graduated from Allen High School. His granddaughter, Teri Story Vrba, was one of the first teachers at Alvis C. Story Elementary when it opened in 1987. Sadly Mr. Story died in 1990. Thanks to him and his love for the people in his community our school lives on.
