Donald S. "Jack" Hazen, 82, of Parsons, a former Erie resident, died at 7:25 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010, at the Presbyterian Manor in Parsons.

He was born on March 28, 1928, at Kimball to John Henry and Angie Bell Matilda (Smith) Hazen. He grew up in the Kimball area and attended schools there.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1949. He moved to Erie, where he worked at Neosho Valley Creamery. He then bought the 59 diner in 1970. He moved to Chanute in 1978 and worked at Bush Hog for a few years, then worked at Churchhill until his retirement in 1993. He moved to Parsons in 2003.

He married Dorothy Moore in 1947. They later divorced.

He married Josephine Shirley Hammans on Sept. 28, 1949, at Erie. She preceded him in death on Jan. 8, 2008.

He enjoyed carpentry, woodworking, camping and having the family together for picnics and dinners on holidays. He ran a saw sharpening business in his retirement for eight years and also worked at Western Auto part time in Erie.

He was a member of First Christian Church at Erie and recently attended First Christian Church in Parsons.

Survivors include his daughter, Debra Mathis of Parsons; two grandchildren, Virgil Mathis Jr. and his wife, Amber, of Parsons and Deanna Gray and her husband, Floyd, of Parsons; nine great-grandchildren; and his companion, Fern Walls of Presbyterian Manor.

He was preceded in death by a son, Donald E. Hazen; two daughters, Linda Jones and Olivia Hazen; three brothers, John, Forrest and Charles Hazen; a half-brother, Oren Hazen; and two sisters, Lenora See and Lola Samples.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery north of Erie. The family will receive friends at from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association and may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, 112 N. 26th St., P.O. Box 942, Parsons, 67357.
