Thomas was born in Missouri, but he moved to the Oregon Territory. In 1861 he enlisted in the Army at Fort Dalles. He was discharged three years later as a private in Troop H of the 1st Cavalry. On Feb 21, 1866, he married Catherine Alexander in Vernango County, Pennsylvania. By 1883 they had moved to Lewis County, Washington, where they raised five children and had a farm. He died in 1904 at age 62.
