Jean Henry Layton Cleveland, of Marietta, died Tuesday morning, April 27, 2010 at Saint Frances Hospital after a brief illness.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Norwood Cleveland. Born in Laurens County on April 16, 1925, she was the daughter of the former Mayor of Clinton, Harry Carson Layton, and his wife, Clara Crawford Henry Layton. Jean graduated from Winthrop College in 1946 and was a journalist by profession. She began her career with The Clinton Chronicle before becoming the Society Editor for The Greenville News for many years. She was a member of Marietta First Baptist Church and the Travelers Rest Garden Club.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Ann Stone Cleveland, of Cedar Mountain , North Carolina; 9 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 29, at Marietta First Baptist Church.
