John Henderson and Delilah Turpen Henderson were early settlers in Decatur County Iowa. They were residents of Lawrence County, Indiana when in the early 1850s "Iowa Fever" swept over Indiana, and large numbers of families moved to Iowa to find better land. On Sept 11,1854 John sold his farm in Section 17 Twp. 6N Lawrence Co. IN.,to his brother Tyre Henderson for $1500.00. This farm was land he had inherited from his parents Jeremiah and Hannah Henderson.

According to the Decatur County History John Henderson settled in Hamilton township in the early 1850s.

John and Delilah's first land purchase in Decatur County was on June 3, 1856 for forty acres in section 8. Their second purchase was on June 10, 1856 when they purchased 160 acres in section 9 adjoining the first piece of property.

He is shown in the 1856 census of Decatur County, Iowa, as John Henderson age 42 his wife Delilah age 47 and children Giney age 16, Tira age 14, Elizabeth age 12, James K. age 10, and Aaron age 8. His older son Moses age 21 is shown near by with his young wife Winney age 16 and their new born son Jeremiah. John's son Jeremiah age 19 with his wife Margaret age 19 and their son John age 1 are shown next door.

In the 1860 Iowa Census, John and Delilah are recorded with real estate valued at $1200. and personal property worth $500. John united with the Baptist Church and was a deacon of the church in the later years of his life.
