She was born on Dec. 18, 1986, to Douglas and Sonya Smith in Arlington. The youngest of two daughters, she attended all levels of grade school in Arlington and graduated from Juan Seguin High School in 2005. Ms. Smith continued her education at the University of Texas at Arlington graduating cum laude with a bachelor's degree in criminology and criminal justice in 2009. Ms. Smith fulfilled her life's dream of protecting the city she grew up in on Aug. 20, 2010, when she graduated from the Arlington Police Academy. Ms. Smith accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at Mount Olive Baptist Church. She was a member of the Mount Olive Youth Choir. While dedicated to her work, she loved spending quality time with her family and friends. She enjoyed life to the fullest and had the rare ability to leave a wonderful impression on everyone she met. Her smile will always shine bright in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Survivors include her parents, Douglas and Sonya Smith; her sister, Jessica Smith; her nephew, Cameron Smith; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Police Officer Jillian Smith was shot and killed December 28th, 2010 (end of watch) responding to a domestic violence. Officer Smith responded to a call of a domestic dispute between a husband and wife. When she arrived, the husband had already left the apartment. Officer Smith was inside the apartment taking a report from the female victim when her husband returned and shot and killed both Officer Smith and his wife. The suspect then shot and killed himself. It appeared Officer Smith was moving in the direction of the child in an effort to protect her and, in that process, she was shot, citing the girl's statement and forensic evidence. Officer Smith had served with the Arlington Police Department for 10 months and had finished her field training 15 days prior to her murder.
