Robert was the son of Robert Thomas Layne & Mary MILAM. He married Mary Frances CARNEY daughter of Rhoda Carney, Jackson Co. WV. 10/22/1867.

They had 10 children, the first died at birth.

Mahala Jane,James Edward, Robert C., Julia Ann, Rhoda M. John S., Pearl, Otmer Fleet, and Emmit F.

Robert Thomas enlisted with the Company A, 7th Cavalry with the Union on July 27, 1861. He was a Corporal and served until January 24, 1865. He enlisted at Aultz’s in Kanawha County which was the state of Virginia at the time.

Robert Thomas served 2 years as Justice of Peace in Union District, one term as Constable, one term as President of Board of Education, and one term as County Board of Supervisors.
