Joshua was the son of David Hanes b 1803, and Elizabeth Lasseter b 1806. Joshua's first wife was 1) Mentoria Allen, 2) A. M. Johnson married 20 May 1860.

From C. Bozeman:
His daughter, Rowena Ford's, entry in "History of Worth County, Georgia," by L.M Grubbs, c. 1934, J.W. Burke Co., Macon GA., p.281, says that her father was Justice of the Inferior Court of Clayton County. He served as 2nd Lieutenant in Co. E 10th Ga Infantry and later as Captain Q.M.C. Confederate Army of America. Her father and grandfather moved the family to Irwin County, Ga to get then out of the dangers of Sherman's raiders just after the battle of Jonesboro. They settled near the spot where Jefferson Davis was captured. After the war was over, Joshua Hanes moved his family back to Jonesboro, GA., and she was reared there. Her grandfather continued to live in Irwin County, Georgia until his death. "
