Major League Baseball Player. He played twelve seasons (1875, 1878-1889) in the early days of baseball as a catcher with the St. Louis Red Stockings of the National Association League, and the Indianapolis Blues and Chicago White Stockings (now the Cubs) in the newly formed National League. During his first season with the White Stockings he managed seventeen of their games, while future Baseball Hall of Famer Cap Anson managed the rest of the games. He died at age 36 as the result of heavy drinking.
