Laura Gale biography
April 1897, James Gale and Elizabeth Ann (Moyes) left Mexico with their five children going to Franklin, Arizona. They started out with three wagons to carry their possessions and very little money. It was a long, hard journey. They crossed the Mexico border at Columbus, spent one night at Hachita, one night at Lordsburg, then on into the 24 Ranch on the Gila River above Virden, New Mexico. After resting there over night they drove into Franklin in June, 1897.
James helped George H Gale buy a quit-claim of land. George filed and patented a homestead and let Elizabeth (Aunt Lizzie) have some of the land. Later a board house was built and the family moved in on Thanksgiving Day, overjoyed to have a solid roof over their heads. Laura, youngest of the five children, was born May 9, 1892, at Colonia Diaz, Chihuahua, Mexico. She was five years old when they made the long journey from Mexico to Franklin.
Laura told her children she remembered sitting in the back of the wagon as they left their home in Mexico. She saw her brindled cat sitting on a wall, washing his face. She thought it was crying and wiping away the tears. She had her fifth birthday on the road.
Laura grew up attending schools in Franklin, and the academy in Thatcher, Arizona. She was very active in church activities, serving as president of the Relief Society, Mutual Improvement, and Primary. She was also a teacher in these organizations as well as Sunday school, and worked on the Genealogical Committee in the Franklin Ward.
