"He married about 1829 at New Lebanon, New York, Emerjane Cowles...buried with her husband. She was a daughter of Moses & Pamela (Fellows) Cowles and a second cousin of her husband. Emerjane's sister Maria married Osborn Hand and another sister, Marcia Cowles, married Nathan Benton Hand, brother of John S. Hand.

"John is listed in the 1830 census of New Lebanon, Columbia County, New York, a couple 20-30 without children. This was surely in the "Hand Hollow" area for he was near his father, Jesse, uncle Joseph Hand and great-uncle Lemuel Hand. John was in the same place in 1840 census, and migrated to Walworth County, Wisconsin with his parents and father-in-law in 1841. He was a farmer in Walworth County all his life thereafter. He and his wife belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church."
