Earl was a life-long learner, avid reader, and loved to keep current about national and world events. He had a natural curiosity, was fascinated by new technologies, and acquired all kinds of ‘gadgets', as he would call them. He owned the first television in his neighborhood. During the 1950's, he was a pilot and an avid ham radio operator, (K6GDB), building most of the equipment himself. He was also a boater, camper, and fisherman, designing his own deep sea fishing rod. Throughout his life he loved cars, electronics, and motors of all types; he was a do-it-yourselfer for all kinds of building, remodel, and repairs. He had a wonderful sense of humor (tinged with sarcasm), and loved to play practical jokes. He traveled around the world during his career, and, upon retirement, traveled throughout the United States in a motor home with his beloved dogs. He cherished family, and loved his children and grandchildren. He lived with his granddaughter, Jenny Bates, and grandson, Jacob Blankenship, in Salem, Oregon for the last year.
He is survived by 3 daughters: Karen Andersen and Nancy Blankenship, of Stockton, CA, and Kimberly Bates; 4 grandchildren: Kristin Moran of Burlingame, CA, Caylin Lukeroth of Stockton, CA; Jenny Bates and Jacob Blankenship of Salem, OR; 3 great-grandchildren, Lucy, Ali and Zoe, in CA. His family wants to express a special thank you to the warm and loving staff at Brookstone care facility that became like family in their support of Earl and his family during the last year.
Earl will be interred at Willamette National Cemetery.
